Preston is situated in the heart of Lancashire, and is the UK’s newest city, as well as the county’s administrative capital. Plans are afoot for major redevelopment of Preston’s retail, leisure and cultural facilities that will add further to the attraction of an already diverse and historically interesting city.
Preston's history can be traced back to before the compilation of the Doomsday Book, and in 1179 a Charter was granted, giving the right to hold a Guild Merchant every 20 years. This "Once in a Preston Guild" tradition still continues today, the next event being in 2012. Like many Lancashire towns, Preston enjoyed prolific growth during the mechanisation of the textile industry during the 18 th and 19 th Centuries, and the region established itself as a major industrial force. During the General Strike of 1842, the most massive industrial action to take place in Britain during the 19 th Century, four people were killed by soldiers during a protest in Preston; a sculpture in commemoration of ‘The Preston Martyrs’ stands in the city’s Winckley Square today.
Today’s Preston has a rich cultural diversity, enhanced by the 25,000 + students of the University of Central Lancashire. Events throughout the year include the unique Easter Egg Rolling event and the colourful Preston Mela Festival of South Asian Culture. The city enjoys a vibrant nightlife, with a great selection of pubs, clubs and entertainment, as well as excellent sports facilities and a proud sporting tradition. The city’s football club, Preston North End, were the first champions of the oldest league competition in the world, and their home Deepdale houses the unique National Football Museum.
With such beautiful countryside and of course the Lancashire coast on its doorstep, Preston continues as a popular location for leisure visitors and tourists, in addition to the many thousands of business visitors to the city.
