The Academy

140a Church Street,
Preston,
PR1 3BU
Tel: 01772 253730

Situated next to the Minster on Church Street is The Academy, an impressive looking Victorian building that has been renovated and given a modern look inside, on several floors. Cask ales are not available here, keg bitter, bottles and lager being the order of the day. Drinks are reasonably priced however, as are the bar meals. The Academy is a popular venue at weekends.

The Assembly

Lune Street,
Preston,
PR1 2NN
Tel: 01772 880046

At the Winckley Square entrance to The Assembly stands a statue commemorating The Preston Martyrs, who were shot during the General Strike of 1842. Inside the former Corn Exchange building, once known as Preston’s Crystal Palace, is a modern pub with a spacious, light and airy feeling and very reasonably priced drinks and meals.

The Black Horse Hotel

166 Friargate,
Preston,
PR1 2EJ
Tel: 01772 204855

The Black Horse Hotel is an oasis of cask ale amid the keg bitter and lager desert of Preston’s city centre. Dating from 1898, this red brick building was formerly a hotel, and has been renovated substantially while retaining original features such as the wonderful ceramic bar counter. The ale and the pub itself have been highly commended by CAMRA, and bar meals are also served.

The Bushell’s Arms

Church Lane,
Preston,
PR3 2BH
Tel: 01772 865235

The Bushell’s Arms in Goosnargh (4 miles north of the city centre) is a traditional pub in every sense, with a well-earned reputation for its fine ales, tasty pub meals and friendly welcome.

The Grey Friar

144 Friargate,
Preston,
PR1 2EJ
Tel: 01772 558542

Well-kept real ale is not as easy to find in Preston as you might hope, but The Greyfriar, a J.D. Wetherspoon pub, keeps a good range of cask ales in addition to the usual fayre offered by this ubiquitous city centre pub chain.

Ye Horns Inn

Horns Lane,
Preston,
PR3 2FJ
Tel: 01772 865230

Another pub in the village of Goosnargh, and another pub that is well known for its well-kept beer and good pub food, Ye Horns Inn offers traditional Lancashire hospitality and a warm welcome.

Cartford Country Inn

Cartford Lane,
Preston,
PR3 0YP
Tel: 01995 670166

The Cartford Country Inn can be found next to a toll bridge over the River Wyre in a very pleasant location, 20 minutes from Preston. There is an on-site brewery (The Hart Brewery), and as you would expect of a Good Pub Guide entry, the beer here is excellent. The Cartford Country Inn is also popular for its bar meals and Sunday dinners.
