Rome is the capital city of Italy and the epitome of all the country is famous for. An ancient city believed to have been founded around 753 BC, it was here that the great Roman Empire began and despite much of the city being burnt down in the Great Fire of AD 64, Rome still had over 1.5 million inhabitants by 100. The Vatican, which is itself an independent state, is located in Rome and is the home of the Pope, the head of the Roman Catholic Church. The popes of earlier centuries invested much money into the area using renaissance artists to create magnificent structures as St Peter’s Basilica and the beautifully painted Sistine Chapel. Outstanding art collections and archaeological finds are housed in the Vatican museums now.

Remnants of the hugely successful Roman Empire can be seen throughout the city with the Colosseum being one of the most well known sights. In the Forum can be seen the buildings that were part of the administration of this authority, and others that were of great significance including the Tempa Vesta and Basilica Giulia. The most well preserved site is the Pantheon, which features an impressive dome that is 43m in diameter. Conveniently, many of the attractions in Rome are concentrated within walking distance of centro storico or the historic city centre.

RomeItaly is well known for its love of good food, and Rome doesn’t disappoint with many excellent restaurants. Fresh produce is available in the many markets and shops and it can be a culinary experience just browsing grocery stores with their bottles of wine and olive oil. In the evenings, the nightlife ranges from the traditional with drinkers enjoying a good bottle of wine over a conversation, to the very modern and trendy. Renowned for its passion for many things, Italy is famous for romance and there are many beautiful areas in which couples can enjoy each other’s company.

Rome provides a unique blend of the ancient and the modern compacted into an area easily explored on foot, making it feel like a living museum wherever you walk. It was known for centuries as Caput Mundi, or the capital of the world, and easily lives up to its reputation as the Eternal City.
