Welcome To the e-travelguide to Hotels, guest houses and attractions in Rotterdam

Make the most of your time in Rotterdam, use the information provided on this web site by clicking on the links above to plan your visit.

Located on the mighty Maas River Rotterdam is the world’s largest port, the industrial centre of the Netherlands and the largest city in the province of South Holland. With its own distinctive personality Rotterdam is very different from fellow Dutch cities Amsterdam and The Hague. The web of canals and winding cobbled streets that typify many of Holland’s towns are mostly absent here and instead there are skyscrapers, modern shopping malls and one of the world’s busiest harbours. This notably different image can be attributed partly to the Second World War when Rotterdam was largely rebuilt anew rather than being reconstructed following bombings. This was a daring and innovative period and Rotterdam has never looked back. It is now home to many important organisations and institutes and overall this lends the city a ‘working’ image as that of a corporate city. Indeed in Rotterdam there are the headquarters for numerous international banks and corporations as well as the World Trade Centre and these bring all of the hotels, conference venues and office spaces that one might expect from a large European city. Rotterdam’s port has long been commercially significant and once acted as seat of one of the six chambers of the Dutch East India Company. Today new apartments, office buildings and radical architecture frame the area around the harbour, and the Kop Van Zuid on the south bank of the river has been the site for a recent regeneration project extending the city centre from its primary location on the north bank of the Maas River.

A young, dynamic and international city Rotterdam has much to offer international visitors. The Dutch have been world leaders in design for a long time and Rotterdam is particularly architecturally exciting with some of the best of 20 th century building design around the city centre. From the famous Cube-shaped houses to the Erasmus Bridge Rotterdam’s distinctive and often futuristic skyline has led to the exciting project City of Architecture 2007. A trip to Rotterdam will not be complete without taking advantage of different viewpoints. Climbing the Euromast tower will give visitors sweeping views across the city skyline and touring the harbour on the Spido ship gives the unique picture of Rotterdam from the water. Children are well catered for in the city with safe and picturesque parks and welcoming cafes in abundance. An excellent visit is to the impressive Diergaarde Blijdorp zoo renowned for it oceanarium where visitors can gaze upon sharks and emperor penguins. MORE.......
