The Royal County Hotel in Durham occupies a prime location on the banks of the River Wear in the heart of Durham’s historic city centre. The Royal County Hotel is Durham city centre’s largest hotel, and also the most well known, having built up a reputation for high standards of comfort, facilities and service over an extended period. Add to this the Royal County Hotel’s proximity to Durham’s magnificent Cathedral and Castle; the colleges of the University of Durham; and the meandering lanes, fabulous restaurants and historic pubs of one of England’s most attractive historic cities, and it is possible to see why the hotel has become such an enduring favourite.

Durham is one of England’s most treasured historic cities. It can be found in the North East of England, at the centre of an enveloping loop in the River Wear. Durham’s most recognisable landmark is the magnificent Norman Cathedral that towers over the city and is visible from miles around. The site upon which today’s Cathedral stands was chosen as the final resting place for St. Cuthbert, the Northumbrian evangeliser whose work on Lindisfarne helped to restore Christianity to the country following the departure of the Romans. Building of the Cathedral was commenced in 1093, and it is the largest and most important example of Norman architecture in the UK. Durham’s medieval city centre grew up around the Cathedral and the mighty Castle, and for many centuries County Durham was ruled not by the crown, but by the powerful Prince Bishops, whose legacy is apparent in the region’s wonderful architecture to this day. County Durham’s fortunes pivoted for centuries on the mining of coal, and the Durham Coalfield helped fuel the mechanisation of the Industrial Revolution. Sadly, no coal mines exist today in County Durham, but the annual Durham Miners’ Gala still lives on and is still a key event in the city’s calendar. Every June sees the spectacular Durham Regatta take to the waters, the second oldest rowing regatta in the country, and also prominent in the city is the University of Durham, England’s fourth oldest University. It is Durham’s multi-faceted nature which makes it such an intriguing place to visit.

The Royal County Hotel makes the ideal base from which to explore Durham and the magnificent countryside beyond. It boasts 150 classically decorated rooms, and appeals to leisure and business guests alike. There are 6 well-equipped meeting rooms, excellent leisure facilities, and the County Restaurant is one of the finest in the region.
