Oakham is a pleasant little market town close to Rutland Water, and is the county town of Rutland – England’s smallest county. An unusual custom was for monarchs passing through the town to pay a fee of one horseshoe; the collection of horseshoes can be found in Oakham Castle today.

Uppingham is a small market town in Rutland, and is the second largest town in the county after Oakham. Its most famous feature is the independent Uppingham School, which was founded in the 16th Century and is one of the UK’s top public schools.

Rutland Water is one of the largest man-made reservoirs in Europe, and can be found in the heart of the county of Rutland. It opened in 1976 to some controversy, as its construction resulted in the submersion of several villages.
