The Seaham Hall Hotel and Serenity Spa is a small luxurious hotel situated on the East Durham Heritage Coast, near the County Durham harbour town of Seaham. Some people may be surprised to find the AA Hotel of the Year 2004 in such a location; the East Durham Coast was for decades neglected and mistreated, with spoil from the Durham Coalfield wreaking havoc on the beaches and the local wildlife. However, the pollution and the misuse is no more; the bleak blackened beaches portrayed in the closing scene of the Michael Caine classic ‘Get Carter’ have been meticulously cleaned, revitalised and preserved for future generations. The East Durham Heritage Coast is a nine-mile stretch of rugged and enchanting coastline running from Seaham Beach to Crimdon Park in County Durham. Cliff top footpaths and cycleways run along the length of the Heritage Coast, taking in dramatic and magnificent scenery and the welcome return of the diverse and rich wildlife has made the coastline an area of international nature conservation importance.
What better way of experiencing the revitalised East Durham Coast than with a stay in one of the UK’s finest hotels? Perched atop the cliffs just to the north of Seaham is The Seaham Hall Hotel and Serenity Spa, and the address of Lord Byron’s Walk is an indication of the connections of the hotel and its surroundings with one of England’s most revered and prolific poets. Revolutionary aristocrat Lord George Gordon Byron was married to Annabella Milbanke at Seaham Hall in 1815 and it was here that they spent their honeymoon. The great hall, like the great Lord Byron himself, went on to live an erratic and idiosyncratic life, and by the latter years of the 20 th Century, Seaham Hall was a pale imitation of its colourful self and in need of revitalisation. Fortunately revitalisation did come, and Seaham Hall was returned to its former glory in an ambitious redevelopment project. The Seaham Hall Hotel and Serenity Spa not only features some of the most chic, daring and stylish hotel rooms to be found not only in the North East, but in the UK, but it also has one of the country’s finest and most thoughtfully executed Oriental Spas, linked to the hotel via a magical underground passageway. There are also excellent conference and banqueting facilities, and one of the finest and most highly commended restaurants outside of London.
