Location: Shottery, 1 mile from Stratford-upon-Avon town centre
Anne Hathaway was the wife of William Shakespeare, and this delightful cottage was her home before they married in 1582. In addition to its romantic associations, as the place where the teenage Shakespeare courted his future wife, the Hathaway home is also regarded as the quintessential English country cottage. The thatched farmhouse continued to be the home of the Hathaway family and descendants until the late 19th Century.
There is also a country garden on the site, beautifully maintained and lovingly tended by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust's gardeners. Another interesting feature is The Shakespeare Tree Garden, which was created in 1988 and planted with most of the trees mentioned in Shakespeare's plays. The garden is also home to a series of sculptures by young artists inspired by Shakespearian themes, and a wonderful labyrinth maze is part of this spectacular garden. Visit time: Allow at least one hour to view Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, the gardens, grounds and shops. The grounds are a perfect place to enjoy a picnic lunch or tea.
The start points of two walks that offer views of Shottery Brook and the surrounding countryside can be found opposite Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.
