William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in this attractive Tudor house in the heart of Stratford town centre. Shakespeare's Birthplace provides an insight into Shakespeare’s childhood. The family rooms have been faithfully recreated, using furniture, utensils and wall hangings from the period. Amongst the fascinating exhibits is a window on which visitors in the 19 th Century scratched their names, including such literary figures as Charles Dickens, Sir Walter Scott, Alfred Tennyson and Thomas Hardy. Enter Shakespeare’s Birthplace through the Visitors' Centre and the highly acclaimed Shakespeare Exhibition with its vivid displays of the theatres in 16 th Century Stratford and London during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

The gardens at Shakespeare’s Birthplace provide a scenic backdrop to the house and feature many plants, trees and shrubs mentioned by Shakespeare in his plays. In Shakespeare’s time the garden would have been used for growing household produce; today this is reflected by the many herbs, fruit trees and fruit bushes that were common in the 16th Century.
