Ironbridge Gorge is packed with superb museums detailing the importance of the region in initiating the Industrial Revolution through the improved smelting of iron ore; the wonderful Iron Bridge that spans the gorge is, however, a magnificent example of the many uses to which the cast iron was put. Designed by Abraham Darby and completed in 1779, the bridge is one of the UK’s most instantly recognisable landmarks; find out about its importance in a small museum located in the original tollhouse.

Shrewsbury was fortified with a castle by the Normans, which was completed by 1074. Much of its original structure is still intact, although it was somewhat remodelled by Thomas Telford to incorporate a private dwelling. Today the castle is open to the public, and also features an interesting museum dedicated to the Shropshire Regiment, with medals, uniforms, pictures and weapons from the earliest days of the regiment to the modern day.
