Located in County Sligo in north west Ireland, Sligo is a booming farm town on the River Garavogue. Surrounded on three sides by mountain, the most famous of which are Knocknarea to the south and Ben Bulben to the north, the city enjoys a majestic natural setting.Indeed, the city’s wonderful variety of mountain, lake, forest and coastline scenery make it one of the most picturesque in Ireland, giving inspiration to the famous poet W.B. Yeats, and drawing visitors from all over the world to marvel at Sligo’s majestic beauty.

Sligo itself is the largest city in the north west of Ireland, boasting a heritage stretching back 6,000 years. The city’s name translates as ‘the place of shells’, drawn from the area’s rich reserves of shellfish and seafood that still forms a major element of Sligo’s economy today. To the west of Sligo is Europe’s oldest Stone Age cemetery at Carrowmore
Knocknarea mountain, where Queen Maeve is buried under the cairn on the summit. The city itself has been settled for thousands of years, but unfortunately little remains of the Medieval city. Nevertheless, Sligo has undergone a major programme of regeneration over the last few years, making it a dynamic and beautiful place to visit.

Visitors can take advantage of the multitude of activities on offer, such as horse riding, golfing, walking, cycling, fishing and water sports, or stop for a drink or something to eat on one of Sligo’s many waterfront promenade cafes and restaurants. But to make the most of a trip to Sligo visitors simply must escape the city itself and explore the outlying countryside, resplendent in all its rugged and rural majesty.
