A 700m long and 320m wide hillfort was discovered during archaeological excavations at Knocknashee in 1988. Located on top of a limestone plateau overlooking the north Connacht plain, an area of 53 acres is enclosed by two earth and stone ramparts reaching a maximum height of 1.5 metres.

Located less than three miles from Sligo is Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, Ireland’s largest collection of megalithic tombs. There is also a restored cottage which houses an exhibition on the site.

Queen Maeve’s Tomb

Constructed during the Neolithic period about 5,000 years ago, the cairn atop Knockarea is reputed to be the burial place of Queen Maeve, the Iron Age queen of Connacht. The site also offers spectacular panoramic views of the middens at Cullenamore and Ballisodare Bay.

Lisadell House, located in the picturesque village of Drumcliffe, was the birthplace of Countess Constance Markievicz, Irish patriot and the first woman to be elected to the House of Commons at Westminster. With a spectacular setting overlooking the Atlantic Ocean amidst the rugged beauty of Ben Belben and Knocknarea, Lisadell House is a classic example of Greek Revival architecture.

Ballymote Castle

Ballymote Catle, construction of which began in 1300, was the final and strongest of the Norman castles built in Connaught. Featuring a number of massive three-quarter round towers at each angle, Ballymote is the most symmetrical of all the Irish ‘keepless’ castles. It was captured by Williamite forces in 1690, who dismantled many of the castle’s defences and filled in the moat.
