Aeroventure, near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, is the county’s very own aircraft museum and offers a great day out for the whole family. On the site of the former RAF Doncaster base, Aeroventure has superb collections of propeller and jet aeroplanes, helicopters, engines, and special displays showing the role of South Yorkshire in Britain’s aviation history.

Wentworth Castle enjoys a beautiful location in the rolling green South Yorkshire countryside near Barnsley, and is surrounded by 600 acres of mature grounds and gardens. There are wonderful collections of magnolias, rhododendrons and camellias, as well as fascinating monuments and resident wildlife. Having secured funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, a multi-million pound programme of refurbishment will further enhance these beautiful gardens.

Brodsworth Hall is located near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, and is a handsome example of Italianate architecture surrounded by mature grounds and gardens. It was built in the 1860s, in a similar style to the famous Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, and has survived the years without significant change. Today it is under the capable and sympathetic care of English Heritage, who have helped preserve this beautiful property for future generations.

Roche Abbey was first founded in 1147, but it was not until 25 years later that the grand Gothic architecture began to emerge; by the end of the 12th Century, Roche Abbey was one of the finest in the country. Several additions were made over the following centuries, but Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries spelled the end for Roche Abbey. It is now a rather forlorn ruin, but the splendour of the original building can clearly be seen.

Rother Valley Country Park, near Rotherham, is the largest country park in South Yorkshire and was opened in 1983. It has plenty to offer, with large expanses of water and a Water Sports Centre. There are also walks and trails, cycle paths and children’s play areas, as well as a golf course and driving range, a craft centre and visitors’ centre.
