Barnsley is a large town in South Yorkshire, on the River Dearne. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Berneslai’, and grew into a prosperous market town. In later years, Barnsley’s economy was driven by the coal mining, textiles and glass-making industries.

Doncaster, affectionately known as ‘Donny’, is a large town in South Yorkshire, approximately 20 miles from Sheffield on a crossing point of the River Don. Like many towns in the region, Doncaster was an important centre for steel making and coal mining.
