Magnificently set across 14 islands at the mouth of Lake Malaren, Stockholm is one of the world's most beautiful cities. Combining Medieval charm with one of Europe's most modern infrastructures, it is one of Scandinavia's great cultural centres, home to an incredible variety of museums, art galleries, theatres and stunning scenery. While Stockholm may not have the long history of many other European capitals, such as Paris or London, it has played a central role in the development of modern Scandinavia. Constructed in the 13th century by Birger Jarl, one of Sweden's most important statesmen, the city formed a bulwark against seaborne invasion. This strategic location made Stockholm one of the key cities of the Kalmar Union, a confederation of Scandinavian states. Opposition to the union within Sweden culminated in the Stockholm Bloodbath, when resistance figures were executed en masse by the Danish king Christian II.
With the reestablishment of the Swedish monarchy in 1523 Stockholm's star continued to rise, growing in political and economic significance. During the 17th century Sweden grew to become a major European power, resulting in construction of many magnificent monuments in Stockholm to reflect its growing status. Despite economic stagnation throughout the 18th century as a result of the Black Death and the Great Northern War, it remained the political and cultural heart of the Swedish Empire, with several magnificent buildings such as the Royal Opera dating from this period. However, it was not until the late 20th that the ultra-modern city of Stockholm that visitors today know and love came into existence. Many historical buildings, including the entire Klara district, were demolished and replaced with constructions of avant garde design. But despite this process of modernisation, Stockholm has far from forsaken its historic ambience in favour of gleaming towers of glass and steel. Indeed, the Medieval Old Town with its cobbled squares and alleyways, bridges, steeples, towers and Renaissance buildings provides the most vivid and memorable experience of Stockholm. Its ancient streets evoke a historic charm that few cities in the world can rival and much of the city's culture and nightlife is to be found in this area. And with one-third of the city consisting of water, with another third of parks and woodland, Stockholm is also one of the world’s greenest and most tranquil urban centres, ensuring visitors will love their stay in this most civilised and exciting of cities.
