Stratford-upon-Avon is one of the UK’s most treasured and internationally famous historic towns. The picturesque, rambling town can be found on the banks of the River Avon in the very heart of rural Warwickshire - birthplace of celebrated playwright William Shakespeare and the home of The Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford is the most popular tourist attraction in the UK outside of London. Stratford-upon-Avon simply resonates in history and exudes a quintessential Englishness in each and every nook and cranny. With its unique ambience and a character and charm all of its own, Stratford offers a host of attractions and activities to appeal to everyone.
There is evidence of habitation in this part of Warwickshire since before the Roman occupation of Britain, and the famous Fosse Way runs close to Stratford en route from Exeter (Isca Dumnoniorum) Lincoln (Lindum). It is however as a quaint Tudor market town that Stratford appears today; many of the town’s characteristic timbered buildings appearing much as they did in the day of William Shakespeare. Admirers of The Bard’s work have flocked to the town since his death in 1616, and the town’s period charm, its selection of fine hotels, wide range of restaurants, traditional English pubs and inns as well as the beauty and attractions of the surrounding area mean Stratford-upon-Avon remains the ideal UK holiday destination to this day.
Situated just 100 miles to the north west of London and with excellent railway and motorway links, Stratford enjoys a wonderful location close to many other historic towns and areas of outstanding natural beauty, from the majesty of Warwick Castle, the charm and beauty of the Cotswolds and the celebrated historic cities of Worcester, Cheltenham and Oxford.
