Stratford-upon-Avon is one of England’s most treasured historic towns. There is so much to see and do, and the rambling buildings and winding lanes make Stratford one of the prettiest towns in the country, and naturally there is a very high concentration of gift and souvenir shops selling a plethora of curios to remember your visit by. Stratford’s most famous son William Shakespeare of course features heavily, and there is a dizzying array of shops selling all manner of Shakespeare related merchandise – from books of original works and critique to mugs, tea-towels and some truly bizarre Shakespearean nick-nacks! Stratford’s delightful town centre is compact and everything is within easy walking distance. There are many precincts and courtyards as well as market places (Warwickshire’s chartered markets are amongst the oldest in the country - Stratford's Friday Charter dates back over 800 years) and broad streets, with everything from tiny curiosity shops and specialist outlets to the familiar High Street brands. Stratford, being something of a literary and theatrical hub has more than its fair share of bookshops both new and second-hand, and there are also a good many antiques shops dotted around the town. Should you start to flag after a hard day’s shopping and sightseeing then there are plenty of coffee shops, cafes and tearooms to revive you. Thankfully, many of Stratford’s streets are closed to traffic so you can wander freely, taking in the atmosphere.
