Surrey is one of the Home Counties of England – its northeastern fringes blend into the sprawling mass of Greater London, and the county is also bordered by Kent, East and West Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire. Surrey has always been one of the most affluent counties in England, a position that is upheld to this day. While many of Surrey’s towns and villages, connected by the rail network and the A3, M3, M23 and M25 roads to London, are dormitory towns for workers who choose a countryside residence over the chaotic hustle and bustle of life in the capital, Surrey strives to maintain its unique identity.

The name ‘Surrey’ is thought to derive from the Old English ‘Suther-ge’ meaning ‘Southern district’, and the region first appeared in chronicles in the early 8 th Century under the name ‘Suthrige’. The region had been colonised during the Roman occupation, but in the Anglo-Saxon era, Surrey was a fiercely contested territory. The Norman Conquest brought great prosperity for Surrey, and its fortunes rose over the following centuries as its staple industries of arable and sheep farming and the wool trade flourished. Surrey also benefited from its proximity to London; many of its towns and villages became important staging posts between the capital and the South Coast’s ports, and the region’s market towns enjoyed brisk passages of trade. Evidence of Surrey’s affluent history still remains today, with vast country estates, manor houses and stately homes seemingly around every corner.

Surrey is a county of contrasting sceneries and lifestyles – from sleepy villages to bustling market towns and suburban life; and from the white-knuckle thrills of Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park to the peaceful surroundings and gentle chalk ridges of the North Downs and Surrey Hills. Surrey contains a treasure trove of internationally renowned attractions, sites of significant historical interest and areas of outstanding natural beauty; and being situated on the very doorstep of London, it is a county just waiting to be explored.
