The orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of Tallinn’s most recognisable landmarks and dominates the Toompea hillside. Commissioned by Tsar Alexander III, the 19th century cathedral is dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky, the Russian hero who in 1242 won the Battle of the Ice on Lake Peipus, in what are today Estonian territorial waters. According to local legend the cathedral has been plagued by structural problems as, while it was commissioned to commemorate a Russian hero, it stands on the grave of an Estonian one.
