The city of Toulon is another of France’s popular Mediterranean coastal resorts and is surrounded by sea to the south and the likes of Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Cannes, Nice and St Tropez to the north-east and north-west. It is the city’s reputation as a naval and military sea base though which marks it out, bringing a sense of uniqueness and prominence to its status.

Looking out south to the picturesque Mediterranean, Toulon has a harbour and the Rade of Toulon which prove ideal for incoming ships and boats. Shipbuilding was a particularly notable sector of the economy in years gone by, while fortifications, which acted as back up to the water-bound part of the military, are also still visible in some places.

Toulon acts as an ideal base from which to reach a variety of impressive Provence towns and cities which abound in each direction. There are also plenty of ancient villages with pretty houses and other features. The city itself is home to an array of architectural diversity, with small yellow and pink houses lining the narrow streets of the historic quarter and Haussmann style designs adorning the streets of the upper town.

ToulonNumerous Provencal food markets provide a certain level of attraction to visitors to the region, while the Mourillon Quarter is also popular for those heading to Toulon. The chic little village came into existence in the 19th century and is situated to the southeast of the city. Big houses, a church, food markets and botanical gardens can be found there while there are also beaches near to the village as well as gardens, restaurants and bars.

Toulon is set against the backdrop of the 584-metre-tall Mount Faron, from which visitors can enjoy excellent views of the Bay of Toulon, offshore islands and other nearby mountains. At the top there is a wild cat breeding centre and the Allied Landings Memorial Museum. Other museums in and around Toulon include the Natural History museum, the Naval museum, the Oriental and Asian Arts museum and the Photography museum.

Around the 170,000-strong city there are three monuments dedicated to the famous actor Raimu who was born in Toulon. He starred in Pagnol’s Trilogy and there is a bust, a statue and a sculpture to remember him. Toulon also features heavily in Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. Finally, Toulon gave birth to the cade toulonnaise speciality which is commonplace on the menus of the city.
