Originally a small fishing village but because
of its rapid growth over the past 100 years
it is now one of the principle seaside resorts
on the West Coast.
The name Weston is made up of two Old English
or Saxon words meaning the west tun or settlement.
Because there are several places called
Weston in Somerset descriptions were added
to tell them apart. What is unusual about
Weston-super-Mare is that the descriptive
part of its name has remained in Medieval
Latin. Super (with small s) means on or
above, and mare is Latin for sea.
The first guidebook for visitors to Weston
super mare was written in 1822. It paints
a vivid portrait of the village at that
time. The population was 735. There was
one hotel, two inns and a number of lodging
houses, which catered for visitors. There
was a Methodist chapel, in addition to the
parish church and a post office.
The Grand pier of which construction began
November 1903 and was opened 1906 is 6,600ft
(20000m) long. The pier was completely destroyed
by fire on the 13th January 1930; it was
reopened in 1933 with a larger funfair.
Weston super mare has all the features
or a typical English seaside town. Its good
beaches, piers, its many attractive parks
and gardens attract holidaymakers. Weston-super-mare
has a two-mile marine parade and golf course,
and a Model village.
