The Bronte Sisters – Anne, Emily and Charlotte – remain three of England’s most iconic writers, and will be forever synonymous with Haworth and its beautiful windswept surroundings that inspired their works. The three sisters, and brother Patrick Branwell, were born in the nearby village of Thornton however, and the house has been remarkably well preserved, giving a fascinating insight into the life of the Bronte family before their move to Haworth in 1820.

West Yorkshire once had a proud coal mining industry but, although now it is sadly no more, the region’s industrial history is celebrated at the National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield. At the centre of the 17-acre site, the NCMM is a unique collection of buildings, exhibitions and displays revealing the history of centuries of mining, from the mining methods and machinery to the miners and their families.

Bramham Park is situated near Wetherby in West Yorkshire, and is a superb example of an early 18th Century formal garden, in the French style. There are 150 acres of ornamental ponds and follies, manicured hedges and flowers to explore, while the centrepiece is the beautiful Bramham Park House, which is open to the public by appointment only.
