Bradford

Bradford is a large city in West Yorkshire; its easternmost fringes blur into the westernmost suburbs of Leeds. A settlement was founded in Anglo-Saxon times, but the city’s most dramatic period of growth came during the Industrial Revolution, when its textile mills made it one of the most prolific industrial centres in the world.

Shipley

Shipley is a medium sized town in West Yorkshire, on the River Aire and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Once an important industrial town in its own right, Shipley today has been absorbed by the expansion of its larger neighbour Bradford.

Keighley

Keighley is a medium sized town in West Yorkshire, and can be found at the confluence of the Rivers Aire and Worth. Like many towns in the area, Keighley grew dramatically during the 19th Century when its textile industries took off; today this industry is sadly no more.

Halifax

Halifax is a large town in West Yorkshire and, like most of its neighbouring towns and cities, became famous for its textile industries; today the industry is all but gone, but a few of the imposing mill buildings still remain.

Castleford

Castleford is a small town in West Yorkshire, and originated as a Roman settlement, prior to its rapid expansion during the 19th Century as its textiles, coal and glass making industries flourished.

Wakefield

Wakefield is a small city in West Yorkshire, on the River Calder. Like many of its neighbours, Wakefield once boasted a proud coal mining industry, and was a key market town for the region’s textile manufacturers.

Dewsbury

Dewsbury is a medium sized town, between Wakefield and Huddersfield in West Yorkshire. The town once had a thriving textile industry, but the few mills that are left standing have mostly been converted to upmarket accommodation.

Wetherby

Wetherby is a small market town in the north east of the county. Its prosperity over the years has been helped by its useful location on the River Wharfe, and its position on the Great North Road (now the A1) midway between London and Edinburgh.
