Wiltshire is a county in the South West of England, bordered by Somerset , Dorset and Hampshire, as well as Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. The now-redundant county of Avon lies to the North West of Wiltshire, and the southernmost fringes of the Cotswolds area of outstanding natural beauty lie in the north of the county. Wiltshire is a scenic, rural county with a long and fascinating history. In addition to its pleasant landscapes and historic attractions, Wiltshire’s plethora of first-rate hotels, traditional inns and award-winning restaurants – not to mention its ease of access via the M4 motorway and the Great Western rail network inspired by Isambard Kingdom Brunel – mean it is a popular destination for short breaks and holidays.
Much of what is now known as the county of Wiltshire was once part of the powerful Anglo Saxon Kingdom of Wessex; yet the history of the region can be traced back much further than this. Wiltshire has perhaps the highest density of prehistoric sites of significant interest and Megalithic icons anywhere in the UK. The most famous examples are the instantly recognisable Stonehenge and the equally impressive Avebury Stone Circle, and the county is rich in such mysterious sites, suggesting that it was actively populated thousands of years BC. In later times, Wiltshire’s prosperity grew from the wool and textile trades and the useful location on the Old Bath Road from London to Bath helped trade enormously. The Old Bath Road has been superseded by the M4 motorway, but the position of towns like Swindon on the M4 corridor have led to their dramatic growth.
The geology and landscapes of Wiltshire are particularly inspiring; much of the county is made of rolling chalk downland – a landscape that is iconic and quintessentially English – and the largest expanse of downland is Salisbury plain, a brooding mysterious wilderness that has been used by the British Army for manoeuvres and training operations for over 100 years. Wiltshire, although it has a modest population, does have several medium and large towns and cities, including Swindon, Salisbury , and the county town of Trowbridge. There are also many picturesque villages dotted around the county, as well as the handsome market towns of Malmesbury, Chippenham and Marlborough.
