Malmesbury

Malmesbury is a small market town in Wiltshire, on the southern fringes of the Cotswolds. It has a long and interesting history; the town’s most recognisable building is its now-ruined 12th Century Abbey.

Swindon

Swindon is the largest town in Wiltshire, and lies on the M4 corridor, between Bristol and London. The town became famous for building trains in the 19th Century, and although this industry has sadly dwindled, Swindon still enjoys good prosperity, and is one of the fastest growing towns in Europe.

Chippenham

Chippenham is a small market town in Wiltshire, and can be found on the banks of the River Avon on the southern fringes of the Cotswolds. Originally founded by the Saxons and an important town in the Kingdom of Wessex, Chippenham has a long and intriguing history.

Devizes

Devizes can be found in the heart of Wiltshire. The town was fortified with a Norman Castle in 1080; the position of the castle was at the boundary of three Norman manors, giving it the name castrum ad divisas – castle at the boundaries – and hence the town was named Devizes.

Trowbridge

Trowbridge is a small town in Wiltshire, yet is the County Town. It is situated on the River Biss, towards the West of the county, and was for centuries one of the West Country’s most important textile towns.

Marlborough

Marlborough is a market town in Wiltshire. Its prosperity grew due to its location on the Old Bath Road, which ran from London to Bath. Perhaps the town’s most famous feature is Marlborough College – one of the UK’s leading public schools.

Warminster

Warminster is an attractive little town situated to the west of Wiltshire, on the southwestern edge of Salisbury Plain and close to the border with Somerset. A quiet little town, perhaps, but Warminster has a far higher than average sighting of UFOs. Longleat House and Safari Park is just outside the town.

Wootton Bassett

Wootton Bassett is situated just a few miles to the west of Swindon in Wiltshire. A pretty little market town, Wootton Bassett’s history can be traced back to the late 7th Century, and the town was for 4 centuries one of the region’s most notorious Rotten Boroughs.

Melksham

Melksham is a small town in West Wiltshire, and stands on the banks of the River Avon. Its name is thought to derive from the Old English Words ‘Meolc’ and ‘Ham’ – ‘Milk’ and ‘Town’. Melksham’s main industry was traditionally textiles, although this changed to industries connected to the railways and automobiles in more recent times.
