Visit Englands ancient
capital and you will savour a wealth of
history, from the 900 year-old Cathedral
Arthurian Round Table to the many fine medieval
buildings. The history of Winchester began
in 450BC. Since that time great kings and
bishops have left lasting reminders of their
presence. During Saxon times Winchester
was the capital of England and the city
remained a royal playground for centuries
afterwards. But as you explore Winchester's
rich heritage, you will quickly discover
that it sits side by side with contemporary
galleries and public art, a thriving shopping
centre and stunning, modern architecture.
The historic heart of Winchester is its
world famous cathedral and the lovely cathedral
close, Winchester college and the house
where Jane Austen died. Follow in the footsteps
of poet John Keats through the water meadows
to St Cross and see the remains of the palace
of the powerful medieval bishops. The city
of Winchester is blessed with many green
and floral areas, both natural and manmade.
There is also many historic houses and enchanting
gardens to visit.
Shopping is no escape from Winchester’s
history, the High Street now mainly traffic
free has a wealth of shops with Regency
and Elizabethan bow fronted windows. The
impressive Lloyds Bank building was formerly
the Guildhall. All the major high street
stores are represented along with a plethora
of specialist and artisan shops. Despite
its genteel air Winchester has a lively
nightlife with a good range of bars, pubs
and clubs. Gastronomes will be in seventh
heaven in the city, which boasts some of
the best restaurants in the country. Good
food can also be found at the monthly Farmers
Market, the largest in Britain, and is held
at Middle Brook Street.
Strategically located Winchester is less
than an hour from London by fast train and
the port city of Southampton is just a short
drive away.
