Standing imposingly on the banks of the River Severn Worcester Cathedral is one of the city’s great landmarks. The cathedral was founded in 680 AD and its full name is The Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Much of the current cathedral dates from the 12th and 13th Centuries, although significant restoration was carried out in the 1860s and the magnificent stained glass is Victorian. Guided tours are available every day taking guests around the cathedral’s medieval library, the royal tombs, the crypt and the ancient Chapter House.

Edward Elgar was born in this cottage near Worcester in 1857, and today the cottage is a celebration of the life of one of Great Britain’s finest composers. A fascinating collection of manuscripts, musical scores, concert programmes and press cuttings, as well as photographs from the Elgar family album tell the story of Worcestershire’s most famous musical son.

The Greyfriars

The Greyfriars is a 15th century merchant’s house that was saved from demolition in the 1930s. The house and its hidden walled garden are now open to the public and maintained by the National Trust. The Greyfriars has been carefully preserved and its panelled interior is filled with antique textiles and interesting furnishings.

 
 

St Andrew’s Spire (The Glover’s Needle)
