Cawood Craft Festival

Held annually each August Bank Holiday, the festival has promoted, preserved and protected the traditional arts and crafts of rural Britain. The fair was originally established to help raise money for the upkeep of the local All Saints Church and is now celebrated as the biggest summer attraction in the Selby area. Stallholders showcase traditional skills such as woodturning, pottery, flower-arranging, bee keeping, driftwood sculpture, millinery, and sewing. With over 100 stalls selling handmade items visitors are sure to come away with something special – perhaps individual gifts, locally produced foodstuffs or unique jewellery.

There are five National Park Centres in the Yorkshire Dales; these can be found in Aysgarth Falls, Grassington, Hawes, Malham and Reeth. They are run by friendly, knowledgeable staff and have essential information about the area. In addition to selling maps, gifts and walk guides the centres also provide information about events going on in the National Park.

The Deep is one of the world’s most spectacular aquariums and an attraction that is sure to delight the whole family with hands on interactive activities and living exhibits. The award-winning aquarium is housed in a dramatic building designed by architect Sir Terry Farrell, located in Hull just an hour away from York. The Deep is home to 40 sharks and over 3,500 fish and is fully dedicated to research and education to increase our understanding of the world’s oceans.

The Ribblehead Viaduct is part of the classic Settle to Carlisle Railway line, and is one of the Yorkshire Dales’ most familiar landmarks. The giant structure has 24 arches, is over 400 feet long, and the line is over 100 feet above the surrounding moors. Many men’s lives were lost building the viaduct; a nearby cemetery is testament to the enormous cost involved in the construction of one of the UK’s most famous railway bridges.

Malham CoveMalham Cove

Malham Cove is a dramatic and extraordinary natural landmark in Malhamdale, in the west of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The 200 ft high crag of carboniferous limestone was formed after the last Ice Age and the action of the melt water over thousands of years has given the cove an intriguing shape, with distinctive clints or grykes on the surface, which sustain rare plant forms.

Bolton Priory can be found by the River Wharfe, in the south eastern corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It has been a site for Christian worship since the 12th Century, when Augustinian monks built the now-ruined structure. A priory church has been constructed within the ruins of the priory, and the site is a popular destination for tourists.

The historic Settle to Carlisle Railway is one of the most scenic railways in the world, and part of its route is through the magnificent Yorkshire Dales National Park. The line took over 6 years to construct, and opened in 1876; today the line is kept running by enthusiasts and takes in 17 viaducts and 14 tunnels along its 72 miles of track.

The Pennine Way is a classic rambler’s route, and wends its way through 270 miles of breathtaking scenery en route from Derbyshire to the Scottish Borders. Along the way it takes in three National Parks: the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland; the section of path through the Dales is particularly splendid, with wonderful scenery and no shortage of stopping off places along the way.
