Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland, magnificently set at the confluence of Lake Zurich and the River Limmat. It is most famous as the centre of the Swiss banking and financial industries, producing one fifth of the entire country’s wealth. It is also regarded as a global city, with the highest standard of living in the world. Among the financial institutions that have their headquarters in Zurich are UBS, Credit Suisse and Swiss Re, as well as many of the world’s most famous banks. This has made Zurich one of the wealthiest cities in the world, a fact reflected in its magnificent edifices and high standard of living. Indeed, Zurich has been a centre of wealth throughout its history, evident in its magnificent 14th century guildhouses and churches.

The city was founded as a Roman customs point on the border of Germania Superior in the year 15 BC. A castle was constructed on the site of the old Roman fortification by the Carolingian King Louis the German in 835, followed by the famous Fraumünster abbey in 853. Zurich was also a key site of the Protestant Reformation under the leadership of Ulrich Zwingli. Zurich ’s long and illustrious history is most evident in the atmospheric Old Town on the left bank of the River Limmat. Its narrow alleyways, historic churches and magnificent riverside guildhouses evoke a charming 19 th century ambience indicative of Switzerland as a whole.

But while Zurich may be one of the world’s most beautiful and historic cities, it is also one of the most modern and exciting. It has emerged as one of the capitals of Europe’s electronic music scene and also hosts the world-famous Street Parade. The Niederdorf district is the place to go for bars and clubs, while the red light district can be found on the Langstrasse. And with one of the world’s finest collections of museums, art galleries, operas and concert venues, Zurich is one of Europe’s most beautiful and cultured cities.
